What Do Cats Do When They're in Heat?

When Cats Are In Heat

When a female cat is in heat (estrus), it’s the time of the year when she is most fertile and ready to mate. The length of the cycle varies based on the climate but in the Northern hemisphere it can be from January until October.

What Do Cats Do When They’re in Heat?

When cats are in heat, they display unmistakable behaviors that can be confusing to owners. Luckily, most of the behaviors you’ll see are normal and part of your kitty’s desire to mate.

Some common signs of a cat in heat include:

Increased vocalization

Yawning, meowing, and crying can be quite loud and can occur often during this time. They’re doing it to attract male cats, so if you’re hearing these noises more often and louder than usual, your cat is probably in heat.

Increased affection

A cat in heat will show a lot of affection, especially when brushed or stroked. They’ll rub up against furniture and walls, and they may even raise their rear quarters when you pet them.

Lordosis

When a cat is in heat, they will lower their front end and stand in a position called “lordosis.” This is a sign of being able to mate.

If your cat is in heat, it’s important to provide her with a safe place to relax. This may involve a warm blanket or a heating pad, but it’s also a good idea to provide her with some additional exercise, like short walks and play sessions. And remember, your cat needs a clean litter box during this time so she doesn’t mark any surfaces around the house.
